How Do I Raise My Freelance Rates To My Clients?

I am a freelance graphic designer and after talking to multiple designers (and non-designers) they’ve told me I charge way too little for my hourly rate. Talking to one designer who’s skillset is about the same as mine, she charges nearly 3 times as much as I do. I have one good client that comes back to me time and again. What should I say to my client? and should I double my rates just like that or gradually build them up in increments?

Build it in increments. Suddenly doubling or tripling your rates only makes you look greedy and out for the money rather than the passion and commitment to your client.
Explain to your client that you are considering a rate increase of say $10 per hour by the end of the month and an additional $10 per hour by the first of the new year. If he/she is a respectable and understanding client, they will be accepting of the increase.
